Data Insight

The band's blues-rock debut mixes covers with originals written by guitarists Peter Green and Jeremy Spencer, who also shared the vocals. Produced by blues specialist Mike Vernon, it established Fleetwood Mac as a leading act of the late-1960s British blues boom.

Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac is the debut studio album by Fleetwood Mac, released in February 1968 on Blue Horizon Records and produced by Mike Vernon. It is a British blues record rooted in the Chicago electric blues tradition that Green, John McVie, and Mick Fleetwood had absorbed through their work in John Mayall's Bluesbreakers. The album was credited with the 'Peter Green's' prefix to distinguish the band from another UK act also using the Fleetwood Mac name, and the prefix reflects the degree to which the band's early identity was defined by Green's slide guitar technique, his minor-key song construction, and the particular dark emotional register that defined all of his best work. Green wrote or co-wrote the majority of the original tracks; the album also includes covers of Robert Johnson's 'Hellhound on My Trail' and Elmore James's 'Shake Your Moneymaker,' grounding the band's blues credentials in acknowledged American sources. The album reached number four on the UK Albums Chart without significant promotion, driven almost entirely by word-of-mouth among blues enthusiasts and the band's reputation as a live act. Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac remains the most purely blues-oriented album in a catalog that would evolve dramatically over the following decade, and it is a primary document of the late-1960s British blues movement that also produced Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, and Jimmy Page.
