Heroes Are Hard to Find is the ninth studio album by Fleetwood Mac, released in September 1974 on Reprise Records. It was the last album to feature Bob Welch, who had been the band's most consistent songwriter through the transitional years following Peter Green's departure, and who resigned at the end of 1974 citing exhaustion and disillusionment; Welch later had a successful solo career built in large part on rerecordings of songs he had written for Fleetwood Mac. Welch and Christine McVie share the songwriting credits roughly equally, with the album continuing the atmospheric melodic rock direction that had characterized the band's output since Future Games. The title track was released as a single and received FM radio play in the United States, where the band's album-oriented rock following had grown substantially during the Welch years. The album was produced by the band themselves, as had become standard practice. Within weeks of Welch's departure, Mick Fleetwood auditioned Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks at Sound City Studios in Los Angeles; the two joined as a pair, and the lineup that would record the 1975 self-titled album was assembled, representing the most commercially significant personnel change in the band's history.
