By the Numbers
Mr. Wonderful is an early blues album dominated by Peter Green and Jeremy Spencer, mixing their originals with Chicago blues covers, several built on the same Elmore James slide riff. Green's compositions were credited to a pseudonym, C.G. Adams, in what he later called a tax dodge.
Mr. Wonderful is the second studio album by Fleetwood Mac, released in August 1968 on Blue Horizon Records and produced by Mike Vernon. It is a British blues record heavily influenced by Chicago electric blues, featuring the expanded lineup of Peter Green, Jeremy Spencer, John McVie, and Mick Fleetwood. Green contributed several original compositions in the minor-key style he was developing, while Spencer's contributions drew directly from Elmore James's slide guitar vocabulary, giving the album two distinct blues approaches existing side by side rather than merged. Unlike the debut, Mr. Wonderful included fuller, more arranged productions on several tracks, with brass sections and piano accompaniment that reflected Vernon's interest in applying a more polished studio approach to blues material. The album sold modestly in the UK but did not produce a significant singles hit, and the band's commercial success during this period came primarily from non-album singles rather than LP sales. Mr. Wonderful was the only Fleetwood Mac album released on Blue Horizon; the band moved to Reprise Records for their third album, marking the beginning of a long relationship with that label.
