Data Insight

Mirage pulled the band back toward accessible pop after the experimental Tusk, with the three songwriters Lindsey Buckingham, Stevie Nicks, and Christine McVie each contributing several tracks. It returned Fleetwood Mac to number one in the US for the first time since Rumours.

Mirage is the thirteenth studio album by Fleetwood Mac, released in June 1982 on Warner Bros. Records and produced by Buckingham, Caillat, and Dashut. It was a deliberate commercial return to the sonic formula of Rumours following the experimental double LP of Tusk, resulting in the band's first album to debut at number one on the Billboard 200 and their highest-charting US album since Rumours. Buckingham, Nicks, and Christine McVie each contributed songs in roughly equal measure, with McVie's 'Hold Me' and 'Oh Bien Amour,' Nicks's 'Gypsy' and 'Oh Daddy,' and Buckingham's 'Love in Store' and 'Book of Love' comprising the principal material. Nicks was simultaneously managing the beginning of her solo career (Bella Donna had been released in 1981, by this point certified quadruple platinum) and her creative energy during this period was partially redirected toward her solo work, which affected the depth of her contribution to Mirage compared to Rumours. 'Hold Me' and 'Gypsy' were the principal singles; 'Gypsy' reached number twelve on the Billboard Hot 100 and its Nicks-directed music video became one of the more iconic visual artifacts of MTV's early period. Mirage is often described as the least artistically adventurous album of the classic lineup, competent and polished, commercially successful but without the emotional urgency of Rumours or the experimental ambition of Tusk.
