By the Numbers
Mystery to Me was written mainly by Bob Welch and Christine McVie, pushing the band further into melodic pop-rock. Its standout is Welch's Hypnotized, which never charted high as a single but became a long-running American FM radio staple.
Mystery to Me is the eighth studio album by Fleetwood Mac, released in October 1973 on Reprise Records. It was recorded with Bob Welch and Bob Weston as the two guitarists, with Christine McVie providing keyboards and co-writing several tracks alongside Welch. The album contains some of Welch's most direct and melodically assured work for the band, including 'Hypnotized,' a slow, atmospheric track that became one of his most enduring contributions to the Fleetwood Mac catalog and has received consistent radio play across the decades since its release. The tour supporting the album was cut short in dramatic fashion when Mick Fleetwood discovered mid-tour that Weston was having an affair with his wife; Weston was dismissed immediately, and the remainder of the tour dates were cancelled, resulting in fan lawsuits and considerable negative press. This was also the period in which the band's manager Clifford Davis claimed legal ownership of the Fleetwood Mac name and sent a replacement band on tour using it, leading to a prolonged legal dispute that Mick Fleetwood and the original members eventually won. Mystery to Me is the last Fleetwood Mac album to feature Bob Weston; Welch would remain for one more record before his own departure in late 1974.
