Obsession returns the group fully to the label-author model: with several members on military leave, every song was written and composed by SM's writers and outside teams like Dem Jointz and Kenzie, leaving no member writing credits. It is a reminder that EXO's authorship share rises and falls with which members are active and how a given album is built.
Obsession is the sixth studio album by EXO, released in November 2019 by SM Entertainment and led by the title track of the same name. Recorded as a six-member release while Xiumin and D.O. served their mandatory military enlistment, the album leaned into a darker hip-hop and R&B sound. All of its songs were written and composed by professional writers and production teams such as Dem Jointz, Kenzie and Jo Yoon-kyung, with no member writing credits this time. It became another strong seller, passing 840,000 copies in South Korea and earning a 3x Platinum certification.
