By the Numbers
The War shows EXO members stepping further into authorship: Chen, Chanyeol and Baekhyun co-wrote lyrics on tracks including 'Ko Ko Bop,' 'Touch It' and 'Chill.' The music and the rest of the lyrics still come from SM's writers and outside teams, so the album blends a growing slice of member-written lyrics with a professionally composed core.
The War is the fourth studio album by EXO, released in July 2017 by SM Entertainment and led by the tropical-house single 'Ko Ko Bop.' Member involvement in writing grew here, with Chen, Chanyeol and Baekhyun credited as co-lyricists on several tracks, including 'Ko Ko Bop' and 'Touch It,' though most songs were still supplied by professional writers and producers such as Kenzie, Jo Yoon-kyung and the Jackie Boyz. The album was a commercial peak for the group, becoming their first to pass 1.1 million copies in South Korea. A repackage, The Power of Music, followed. Lay sat out promotions due to solo activities in China.
