The Bitter Truth is the band's first album of fully new material in a decade, co-written by Amy Lee with the band and shaped with producer Nick Raskulinecz, who handled production, mixing and recording. Lee has said some of the songs had been in development for years before the album took form. The record returns Evanescence to a guitar-driven alternative and gothic metal sound after the orchestral detour of Synthesis. Its themes center on confronting hard truths as a path to growth and healing.
The Bitter Truth is Evanescence's fifth studio album, released March 26, 2021 on BMG, their first album of new material in a decade. Produced by Nick Raskulinecz, the album was written collectively by Amy Lee, Will Hunt, Tim McCord, Troy McLawhorn, and Jen Majura. "Use My Voice" features an ensemble of prominent female rock voices including Lzzy Hale, Taylor Momsen, Lindsey Stirling, Sharon den Adel, and Deena Jakoub, and was co-written with Jakoub. "Artifact/The Turn" was co-written with Scott Kirkland of The Crystal Method. "Better Without You" lists producer Raskulinecz as a co-writer alongside the band.
