Amy Lee co-wrote the entire album, sharing the bulk of the writing with co-founder Ben Moody and David Hodges, the two collaborators who shaped Evanescence's piano-driven gothic sound during the band's demo years. Lee wrote the lyrics to every song except 'My Immortal,' which originated with Moody, and she handled the melodies, piano parts, and choral arrangements. Moody left the band mid-tour in October 2003, making Fallen the last full album built around the original Lee-Moody partnership. The lead single 'Bring Me to Life' features rap vocals from Paul McCoy of 12 Stones, an addition the label Wind-up pushed onto the track to broaden its radio appeal.
Fallen is Evanescence's debut studio album, released March 4, 2003 on Wind-up Records. Produced by Dave Fortman (with Ben Moody producing "My Immortal"), the album blends alternative metal with orchestral and piano-driven balladry. "Bring Me to Life," featuring Paul McCoy of 12 Stones, reached No. 1 across multiple charts and won the Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance. "My Immortal" became one of the most recognizable piano ballads of the decade. Fallen sold over 17 million copies worldwide, making it one of the best-selling debut albums in rock history. Amy Lee, Ben Moody, and David Hodges co-wrote most of the album; Moody departed the band during the subsequent tour in 2003.
