Synthesis is largely a reimagining rather than a collection of new songs. Most of its tracks are orchestral and electronic re-recordings of earlier Evanescence material, with arrangements and conducting by David Campbell over new productions led by Amy Lee and Will Hunt. The reworked songs were originally co-written by Lee with collaborators such as Ben Moody, David Hodges and Terry Balsamo across Fallen, The Open Door and the self-titled Evanescence. Only two compositions, 'Imperfection' and 'Hi-Lo,' are genuinely new, alongside instrumental interludes.
Synthesis is Evanescence's fourth studio album, released November 10, 2017 on BMG. Co-produced by Amy Lee and Will Hunt, the album reimagines 14 tracks from the band's earlier catalog with orchestral and electronic arrangements conducted by David Campbell, plus two new original compositions: "Hi-Lo" (featuring Lindsey Stirling) and "Imperfection." The album also includes three instrumental pieces, an "Overture," the interlude "Unraveling," and the solo piano "The In-Between," all written by Lee. "Secret Door," a deluxe bonus track from the 2011 self-titled album, is also included.
