Believe

Believe is the second studio album by Disturbed, released in September 2002 on Reprise Records and produced by Johnny K. It was the follow-up to one of the most commercially successful nu-metal debuts of the decade, and an album that maintained the commercial formula of The Sickness while demonstrating Draiman's growing confidence as a lyricist and the band's expanding production vocabulary. Draiman wrote all lyrics; the album's themes address faith, doubt, and spiritual struggle with a directness unusual in heavy metal, with 'Prayer,' 'Liberate,' 'Breathe,' and 'Bound' among the principal tracks. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 with 204,000 first-week sales, the first of multiple Disturbed number-one debuts, and has been certified triple platinum in the United States. 'Prayer' spent four weeks at number one on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart, demonstrating the band's commercial dominance at rock radio during this period. Believe represents the second data point in a run of commercial consistency that would eventually make Disturbed the first artist in Billboard history to have seven consecutive number-one albums on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart. Believe's commercial success and artistic evolution made it the most significant record in establishing Bieber's long-term commercial viability as an adult artist, demonstrating that the structural challenge of transitioning a teen pop star to adult pop success, a challenge that had defeated many predecessors, could be navigated successfully with the right production collaborators and creative ambition.
