Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording for Toxic (2005)
Data Insight

In the Zone is Britney Spears's most self-authored album to that point: she co-wrote two-thirds of its tracks, including the ballad Everytime. She steered the sound toward dance and hip-hop with producers like Bloodshy & Avant, whose Toxic became her most acclaimed single. It marks her clearest shift from performer toward writer.

In the Zone is the fourth studio album by Britney Spears, released in November 2003 on Jive Records and produced by The Matrix, R. Kelly, Guy Sigsworth, Christopher 'Tricky' Stewart, and others. It was Spears's first album on which she received significant co-writing credits throughout and the most musically ambitious of her first phase, with Madonna appearing on 'Me Against the Music' in a collaboration that positioned both artists within the electronic dance mainstream. Spears co-wrote or co-produced most tracks; 'Toxic' (produced by Bloodshy & Avant) became the most critically admired single of her career and won the Grammy for Best Dance Recording, with its Bollywood-inflected string sample and electronic production representing the most sophisticated compositional construction of any single in her catalog. In the Zone debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 with 609,000 first-week sales and has been certified three-times platinum in the United States. 'Toxic,' 'Everytime,' and 'Outrageous' were the principal singles; the album is regarded by critics as the peak of Spears's creative ambition before the personal difficulties of the mid-2000s and the conservatorship that would dominate the following decade.
