Britney Jean was billed as Britney Spears's most personal album, and it is the one record in her catalog where she co-wrote every track. Will.i.am served as executive producer, and the songs draw on her 2013 breakup. Despite the full writing involvement and personal framing, it became her lowest-selling studio album.
Britney Jean is the eighth studio album by Britney Spears, released in December 2013 on RCA Records and produced by, will.i.am, David Guetta, and others. The title combines her first and middle name as a statement of authenticity that the material on the album did not consistently support. Spears co-wrote several tracks; the album's seven tracks (the shortest Spears studio album) include 'Work Bitch,' 'Perfume,' and 'Alien.' 'Work Bitch' was the lead single and was a commercial disappointment relative to previous lead singles; the album debuted at number 34 on the Billboard 200 with 107,000 first-week sales, her lowest first-week performance since the debut. Britney Jean is generally regarded as the weakest commercial and artistic performance of the conservatorship era and the album that demonstrated the limits of the formula when the marketing infrastructure was not fully engaged.
