By the Numbers
...Baby One More Time is a textbook producer-driven pop debut: Britney Spears wrote none of its eleven songs. The material came from outside writers and producers led by Max Martin, who wrote or co-wrote the title track and much of the album, with Eric Foster White and a team of Swedish songwriters supplying the rest. Spears is the voice and the star here, not the author.
...Baby One More Time is the debut studio album by Britney Spears, released in January 1999 on Jive Records and produced by Max Martin and Denniz Pop. It is the album that launched the teen pop explosion of the late 1990s and introduced the most commercially dominant female pop star of her generation to a worldwide audience. Spears did not write any of the material; the title track was written by Max Martin, then a relatively unknown Swedish producer, and became one of the best-selling singles in history upon release, spending two weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and generating a school-uniform music video that is among the most recognizable pop images of the decade. The album sold 500,000 copies in the United States in its first week, the largest first-week sales figure for a debut album by a female artist at the time, and has been certified 14-times platinum in the United States, one of the best-selling albums in American history. 'Sometimes,' 'Born to Make You Happy,' and '(You Drive Me) Crazy' followed as additional singles; the album reached number one in 15 countries. ...Baby One More Time established the bubblegum-to-sexual ambiguity tone, the Max Martin production framework, and the visual identity, Catholic schoolgirl outfit, ponytails, choreographed dance breaks, that would define the first phase of Spears's career.
