By the Numbers
This album is Streisand working entirely as an interpreter of Broadway show tunes, not as a songwriter. Every track is drawn from an existing stage musical, so the composer and lyricist columns belong to Sondheim, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Bernstein, Loesser, Kern, and the Gershwins rather than to her. Stephen Sondheim is the central creative collaborator: he wrote both music and lyrics for four of his songs featured here, and at Streisand's request he wrote additional lyrics for 'Putting It Together' and reworked 'Send in the Clowns' to fit her reading. The value she adds sits in the vocal performances and the lush new arrangements by producers including Peter Matz, David Foster, and Paul Jabara, not in authorship of the songs.
The Broadway Album is a studio album by Barbra Streisand, released November 4, 1985 on Columbia Records. It reached number one on the Billboard 200 in early 1986 and was nominated for the Album of the Year Grammy. Streisand won the Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Performance, Female, her record-extending win in that category. The record returned her to the show tunes and standards that launched her career, with material drawn from Sondheim, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Bernstein, Loesser, Kern, and Gershwin. Stephen Sondheim was closely involved, reworking and writing new lyrics for 'Putting It Together' and 'Send in the Clowns' at Streisand's request, and several of his own compositions anchor the program. It was certified 4x Platinum in the United States and sold several million copies worldwide.
