By the Numbers
This is an interpreter's album, not a songwriter's. Streisand sings twelve theater songs and writes none of them, so the composer and lyricist columns belong to the shows' original authors: Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, Kurt Weill and Ogden Nash, Frank Loesser, the Gershwins, and the two dominant living voices of the record, Stephen Sondheim and Andrew Lloyd Webber. The program deliberately mixes eras, setting golden-age standards from South Pacific and Guys and Dolls against then-new material from The Phantom of the Opera and the 1992 Sunset Boulevard. Two songs are staged as duets with the men associated with them, Michael Crawford from Phantom and Johnny Mathis on the West Side Story medley. Production splits cleanly: David Foster leads the standards while Lloyd Webber and Nigel Wright oversee the Sunset Boulevard pieces, and Streisand co-produces across the album.
Back to Broadway is the twenty-sixth studio album by Barbra Streisand, released on June 29, 1993, by Columbia Records as a sequel to her 1985 record The Broadway Album. It gathers twelve songs from classic and contemporary Broadway musicals, pairing golden-age standards by Rodgers and Hammerstein, Frank Loesser, and the Gershwins with newer material by Stephen Sondheim and Andrew Lloyd Webber. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 on first-week sales of about 189,000 copies, making Streisand the only female artist to top the US album chart in four different decades. David Foster produced most of the record, with Streisand co-producing throughout and Lloyd Webber and Nigel Wright handling the two Sunset Boulevard selections. It features a duet with Michael Crawford on 'The Music of the Night' and one with Johnny Mathis on the West Side Story medley, and was certified double platinum by the RIAA.
