This is a singer's album, not a songwriter's - Streisand writes nothing and interprets everything. The material splits between Broadway and standards writers and a set of specially chosen children's-perspective songs tied to the TV special. Show-tune names anchor the record: Leonard Bernstein on the opener, Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt of 'The Fantasticks' on 'I Can See It,' Michael Leonard and Herbert Martin from 'The Yearling' on both 'My Pa' and 'Why Did I Choose You?,' and George and Ira Gershwin on 'Someone to Watch Over Me.' The closer 'My Man' is the French cabaret standard 'Mon Homme,' composed by Maurice Yvain with English lyrics by Channing Pollock. Robert Mersey produced and arranged the whole set.
My Name Is Barbra is a 1965 studio album by Barbra Streisand, released on Columbia Records as the companion to her first CBS television special of the same name. Produced by Robert Mersey, it collects show tunes, standards, and specially written children's-themed songs that mirror the special's coming-of-age arc, opening with Leonard Bernstein's 'My Name Is Barbara' and closing with her signature reading of 'My Man.' Streisand sings lead throughout, interpreting material by writers ranging from George and Ira Gershwin to Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt of 'The Fantasticks.' The record reached number two on the Billboard 200, was certified Gold by the RIAA, and sold about a million copies worldwide. It won Streisand the Grammy Award for Best Female Vocal Performance at the 8th Annual Grammy Awards.
