Data Insight

Unbreakable was the Backstreet Boys' first album as a four-piece after Kevin Richardson left in 2006. The members co-wrote five of its tracks with longtime collaborator Jeremy Carpenter, while the bulk of the material still came from outside writers and producer Dan Muckala.

Unbreakable is the fifth studio album by Backstreet Boys, released in October 2007 on Jive Records. It was the first album recorded without Kevin Richardson, who had departed the group in June 2006, reducing the band to a quartet of AJ McLean, Howie Dorough, Brian Littrell, and Nick Carter. The band co-wrote several tracks; the album's material reflects a contemporary pop and R&B production approach that aligned the remaining members' sound with the 2007 mainstream rather than the late 1990s boy-band framework. Unbreakable debuted at number seven on the Billboard 200 with 62,000 first-week sales, the lowest opening week of any Backstreet Boys album, and is not certified as a commercially significant release in the United States. The album's modest commercial performance reflected both the absence of Richardson and the broader commercial disappearance of the traditional boy-band format in the mid-2000s mainstream. Unbreakable nonetheless demonstrated the loyalty of a core fanbase that had followed the group since the 1990s and the commercial viability of the Backstreet Boys brand even in reduced commercial circumstances, serving as a bridge to the Kevin Richardson reunion that would drive In a World Like This.
