By the Numbers
DNA was the Backstreet Boys' comeback, their first US number-one album in 19 years, and as on most of their records the songs came from outside writers rather than the group. Contributors included Ryan Tedder, Shawn Mendes, Lauv, and Andy Grammer, with no group members credited as writers.
DNA is the eighth studio album by Backstreet Boys, released in January 2019 on BMG Records. It was their first album in six years and first to debut at number one on the Billboard 200 since Black & Blue in 2000, an unexpected commercial achievement that reflected the sustained commercial appeal of the original lineup in the streaming era. The band co-wrote several tracks with professional songwriters; 'Don't Go Breaking My Heart,' 'Nobody Else,' and 'New Love' were the principal singles, with production that incorporated contemporary pop production while maintaining the multi-part vocal harmony approach of the peak catalog. DNA debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 with 99,000 first-week units, their first number-one debut in nearly two decades, and has been certified gold in the United States. The album's unexpected commercial performance demonstrated that the nostalgia economy for late 1990s pop was commercially significant enough to drive major chart performance and that the Backstreet Boys remained a viable commercial entity 23 years after their debut. DNA's chart success demonstrated that the streaming era had created commercial conditions in which nostalgia-driven catalog artists could compete directly with current acts for chart position, and its performance was cited across the industry as evidence of the sustained commercial value of 1990s pop acts.
