Data Insight

The Backstreet Boys' 1996 international debut was assembled entirely by outside writers and producers, led by Max Martin and Denniz Pop at Sweden's Cheiron Studios. The group did not write any of the material; they were the performers of songs built specifically for them.

Backstreet Boys is the international debut studio album by Backstreet Boys, released in August 1996 on Jive Records internationally (and in April 1997 in the United States). It is the album that introduced the Orlando-based quintet who would become the best-selling boy band of all time and the commercial force that, alongside NSYNC, launched the late 1990s teen pop era. The band performed all vocals; songwriting was provided entirely by professional writers including Max Martin, Denniz Pop, Veit Renn, and others, a professional-songwriter model that would characterize the boy band format. 'We've Got It Goin' On,' 'I'll Never Break Your Heart,' 'Get Down (You're the One for Me),' and 'Quit Playing Games (with My Heart)' were the principal singles; 'Quit Playing Games' became their breakthrough US single, spending a week at number two on the Billboard Hot 100. The album reached number four on the Billboard 200 in its 1997 US edition, a separate reissue the RIAA certified 14 times platinum; in Europe, where it was released nine months earlier, it was certified multiple times platinum across multiple countries and established the international commercial foundation that would sustain their subsequent US breakthrough. The album remains commercially significant as the document that launched the global teen pop phenomenon of the late 1990s and demonstrated that the boy band formula, honed in Orlando by managers Wright and Pearlman, could generate commercial results that exceeded those of any previous group of its type.
