By the Numbers
The Visitors was the final studio album of ABBA's classic era, written entirely by Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus. Recorded digitally at Polar Studios, it pushed the group toward a darker, more synth-driven and introspective sound that broke from their earlier pop sheen. "One of Us" became the album's lead single and biggest hit, while the songs reflected the personal and political strains of the period. It made a mature closing statement before the band's long hiatus.
The Visitors is ABBA's eighth and final original studio album, released in November 1981, widely regarded as their most sonically ambitious and emotionally complex work. Recording began in March 1981 amid the parallel divorces of both couples in the band: Björn and Agnetha had separated in 1980, and Benny and Frida announced their divorce during the sessions. All tracks are written solely by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus. The title track employs ominous synthesizers and Anni-Frid Lyngstad's lead vocal to signal a marked departure from ABBA's earlier pop style. The Visitors was among the first commercially released albums to be digitally recorded and mixed.
