By the Numbers
Super Trouper was written entirely by Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus and arrived as both couples in ABBA were splitting up, a tension that runs through much of the record. "The Winner Takes It All" became the album's centerpiece, a ballad about the end of a marriage that gave the group one of its most enduring hits, while the title track "Super Trouper" topped the UK chart. The reflective, often melancholy songwriting sits beside brighter pop arrangements, giving the album an undercurrent of farewell beneath its polish. It became the United Kingdom's best-selling album of 1980 despite its late-year release.
Super Trouper is ABBA's seventh studio album, released in November 1980, representing a deliberate move away from the disco-heavy style of Voulez-Vous toward a more restrained pop sound. The album produced two massive UK hits: the title track 'Super Trouper' and the celebrated ballad 'The Winner Takes It All.' All ten tracks are written by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, who also produced the record. The closing track 'The Way Old Friends Do' is the only live recording on any ABBA studio album, captured at Wembley Arena in November 1979. Super Trouper became the fastest-selling album in the UK at the time of its release, entering the chart at number one.
