By the Numbers
ABBA was the group's third studio album, written by Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus with several songs co-credited to manager Stig Anderson and produced by Andersson and Ulvaeus. It marked the point where the band moved past their Eurovision win and settled into a confident pop sound, anchored by "SOS," "Mamma Mia," and "I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do." "SOS" returned the group to the international charts and "Mamma Mia" went on to top the UK Singles Chart in early 1976. The record reached number one in Sweden, Australia, and Norway, establishing ABBA as a lasting pop act rather than a one-off contest winner.
ABBA is the group's third studio album, released in April 1975, and the first to reflect their growing international profile. The record produced three major hits: 'Mamma Mia,' 'SOS,' and 'I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do,' establishing ABBA's signature style of layered vocal harmonies over melodic pop. Stig Anderson co-wrote six of the eleven tracks, while Andersson and Ulvaeus composed the remaining five as a duo. The instrumental 'Intermezzo No. 1' showcases Benny Andersson's classical keyboard influences and is the only non-vocal piece in the group's original catalog. The album also features an early experiment in reggae-influenced pop with 'Tropical Loveland.'
