By the Numbers
Written and produced by Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus, The Album marked the point where the group's craft fully took over, with Stig Anderson's creative involvement winding down around this period. It was tied to the band's feature film ABBA: The Movie and ran alongside the stage mini-musical "The Girl with the Golden Hair". The two big hits were "The Name of the Game" and "Take a Chance on Me", both of which topped the UK chart and pushed the record to platinum status on both sides of the Atlantic.
ABBA: The Album is the group's fifth studio album, released in December 1977 to coincide with the release of the concert film ABBA: The Movie. The album yielded two UK number-one singles ('Take a Chance on Me' and 'The Name of the Game') alongside the fan favorite 'Thank You for the Music.' The final three tracks form a self-contained mini-musical segment, 'The Girl with the Golden Hair,' originally staged during the 1977 world tour. Stig Anderson co-wrote three of the nine tracks, while Andersson and Ulvaeus wrote the remaining six as a duo. The album debuted at number one in the UK and remained on the chart for seven weeks.
