XXXTENTACION was an American rapper, singer, songwriter and record producer, born Jahseh Dwayne Ricardo Onfroy in Plantation, Florida in 1998. He released music from 2013 and broke through with "Look at Me!", cutting between rap, emo, acoustic ballads and nu metal on records that rarely ran past half an hour. His debut album 17 arrived in 2017 and ? followed in 2018, going to number one on the Billboard 200. He was shot and killed in Deerfield Beach, Florida in June 2018 at the age of twenty, and two further albums, Skins and Bad Vibes Forever, were released after his death. He wrote and produced a large share of his own catalogue, which makes the authorship question on the posthumous records a different one from the albums he finished himself.

Why is his songwriting talked about alongside a criminal record?
The two ran side by side. He was arrested in October 2016 on charges of aggravated battery of a pregnant woman, domestic battery and false imprisonment, with witness tampering charges added later, and he was still awaiting trial when he was shot and killed in June 2018; prosecutors voluntarily dropped the domestic violence charges after his death. Spotify stopped promoting his music in May 2018 under a conduct policy it reversed soon after. None of that altered the paperwork on the songs, and he is credited as a writer on every track of all four studio albums.
