Onfroy has a writing credit on all eleven tracks and is credited as a producer on six of them, which is why the album sounds like one person's decisions instead of a room's. The credit lists only widen twice, on "Save Me" with ten writers and "Dead Inside (Interlude)" with five, and both run through Natra Average, who turns up in those same writer lines under his legal name, Christopher Gibbs. Potsu supplies the loops for the three songs built on Shiloh Dynasty vocal clips, and "Fuck Love" is the only track handed to an outside team, with Nick Mira, Taz Taylor and Dex Duncan sharing the board. Tobias Jesso Jr. plays the piano on the closer and shares its writing with Onfroy and John Cunningham.

17 was XXXTentacion's first studio album, released through Bad Vibes Forever and Empire Distribution on August 25, 2017. It runs under 22 minutes and no song on it passes three, and he built the record on acoustic guitar and piano rather than the distorted trap sound he had been making in Florida. The writing circles suicide, failed relationships and infidelity, and he said plainly who it was for: "If you listen to me to get hype or to not think, don't buy this album, this one is for the depression, for the depressed ones, for the lost ones." Trippie Redd is the only guest, and audio clips of the singer Shiloh Dynasty carry three of the tracks.
