Data Insight

The credits on Skins show who was still in the room at the end. XXXTentacion is a listed writer on all ten tracks, so authorship of the songs themselves is not really in question. What the paperwork also shows is John Cunningham writing on nine of them, producing or co-producing eight, and holding album-level credits for bass, drums, guitar, piano, programming, engineering, mixing and executive production. That is the credit spread of someone building arrangements around vocal takes that already existed, not of someone tracking in a room with the singer. Robert Soukiasyan does the same double duty on four tracks, writing, playing keys or piano, engineering and mixing. "One Minute" is the clearest case: Kanye West, CyHi and Travis Barker all hold writing credits on a song assembled after Onfroy was dead, and Genius lists Will Chason recording alongside Cunningham, which means separate sessions were joined into one master. Posthumous release does not change who wrote a line. It moves every decision that was left to the producers and the estate, including which takes survive and where a track ends. When reviewers called the album unfinished, that gap is what they were describing.

Skins came out on December 7, 2018, six months after XXXTentacion was shot and killed in Florida. Ten tracks run 19 minutes and 44 seconds, and three of them stop before the 90 second mark. The sound is lo-fi loops, acoustic guitar and distorted riffs, closer to sketches than to the arrangements on his second album. John Cunningham produced or co-produced eight of the ten and put the record together from sessions the rapper had already tracked.

Frequently Asked Questions Skins

Was Skins finished before XXXTentacion died?
No. He was killed on June 18, 2018, and the album came out on December 7 that year. John Cunningham built it from sessions that already existed, and reviewers at Slant and XXL wrote that several tracks played more like demos than finished songs. The whole album runs 19 minutes and 44 seconds across ten tracks.
Who produced Skins?
John Cunningham produced or co-produced eight of the ten tracks. XXXTentacion holds production credits on five, Robert Soukiasyan on three, and potsu, Cubeatz, Gnealz and Nils on one each. Cunningham also played bass, guitar and piano across the record and shares executive production with XXXTentacion.
Is Kanye West actually on this album?
Yes, on "One Minute", alongside Travis Barker. West had privately previewed a song carrying XXXTentacion vocals in September 2018 for his own project, and a snippet of "One Minute" leaked on November 23 before the official track listing confirmed it on December 3.
How did Skins perform on the charts?
It debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 with 132,000 album-equivalent units, of which 52,000 were pure album sales, and it spent 18 weeks on the chart. That made it XXXTentacion's second US number-one album. The single "Bad!" reached number 16 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Why is Skins so short?
XXXTentacion had said on Instagram that the album would be "super short. It's literally gonna be a minute." The finished record holds ten tracks at 19 minutes and 44 seconds, with "Introduction" at 31 seconds and three more tracks under 90 seconds. An iTunes listing that briefly went live on November 7 showed the album at 17 minutes.
Data note: potsu is credited by Genius as a writer and co-producer on "Guardian Angel" but no legal name is published on MusicBrainz, Discogs or Genius, so that credit stays in lyricists only. Nils appears under Producers on the Genius page for "I Don't Let Go" with an additional production credit and no fuller name on any source checked. Genius lists writers the Wikipedia track table leaves out, specifically potsu and Shiloh Dynasty on "Guardian Angel" and CyHi on "One Minute", plus producers Gnealz on "Bad!" and Nils on "I Don't Let Go"; both sets are kept. Travis Barker is billed as a featured artist on "One Minute" with no instrument named on that track's Genius page, so his role there is recorded as Featured Artist, while his drum credit is attached to "Staring at the Sky", where Genius names it.
