Dysfunction was Staind's major-label debut, written entirely by the band, with Aaron Lewis on lyrics and Mike Mushok composing most of the music. Produced by Terry Date with Fred Durst's backing after he discovered the band, it delivered the rock-radio hits "Mudshovel" and "Home." The album is fully self-written, establishing the band's heavy, brooding sound.

Released on 13 April 1999, Dysfunction opened at number 173 on the Billboard 200 with 29,000 copies and looked like a failure before rock radio caught up with it. Driven by 'Just Go', 'Mudshovel' and 'Home', it climbed to number 74 that November and stayed on the chart 56 weeks. Terry Date produced it in Seattle, and it was certified double platinum in February 2004.
