By the Numbers
14 Shades of Grey is fully self-written, with Aaron Lewis on lyrics and the band on music, marking a shift toward a more melodic, post-grunge sound. The single "So Far Away" became a huge rock-radio hit, spending fourteen weeks atop the Mainstream Rock chart and reaching number 24 on the Hot 100. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and is entirely the band's own writing.
14 Shades of Grey arrived on 20 May 2003 and gave Staind a second straight Billboard 200 number one, opening with 220,000 copies. Josh Abraham produced it again, this time over seven months at Westlake in Los Angeles, and the band pulled back from the screaming of their early records. It was certified gold by July 2003 and platinum after that.
