This Is Acting is built almost entirely from songs Sia wrote for other artists who passed on them, which she then recorded herself. 'Alive' was co-written with Adele and Tobias Jesso Jr. for Adele's album 25 before Adele rejected it; 'Cheap Thrills' was written for Rihanna's Anti and turned down; and 'Move Your Body' was originally intended for Shakira. Sia compared writing in other artists' voices to play-acting, which gave the album its title. As on her previous record, she leaned heavily on producers Greg Kurstin and Jesse Shatkin, with additional production from Kanye West and Jack Antonoff.
Sia's seventh studio album, released January 29, 2016 on Monkey Puzzle Records and RCA Records. The album's concept centres on songs Sia wrote for other artists that were ultimately rejected, she then recorded them herself. It features tracks originally intended for Adele, Beyoncé, Rihanna, and Katy Perry, among others. Produced primarily by Greg Kurstin and Jesse Shatkin, the album includes the hit singles 'Cheap Thrills', 'Alive' (co-written with Adele), and 'Unstoppable'. 'Cheap Thrills' became one of the best-selling singles of 2016.
