Data Insight

OnlySee is Sia Furler's obscure debut, recorded in under three weeks and released only in Australia on Flavoured Records under her full name. It was produced and mostly written by Jesse Flavell; Sia wrote or co-wrote six of the thirteen tracks rather than steering the project as primary author. The record had almost no promotion and sold roughly 1,200 copies, making it the least documented release in her catalog.

Sia's debut studio album, released in 1997 exclusively in Australia on Flavoured Records. Recorded as part of her work with the Adelaide jazz-soul group Crisp, OnlySee is a largely unknown early work outside Australia. It predates her move to London and her emergence as a singer-songwriter on the UK circuit. The album is extremely rare and has never been released outside Australia or made available on major streaming platforms.

Frequently Asked Questions OnlySee

Who produced Sia's OnlySee?
OnlySee was produced by Jesse Flavell, who also wrote most of the album's songs. Flavell played electric, acoustic and lap steel guitar, bass and sampler across the record. It was recorded in under three weeks in Australia.
Did Sia write OnlySee herself?
No, Sia did not write OnlySee on her own. Jesse Flavell wrote most of the material, while Sia wrote or co-wrote six of the thirteen tracks. This makes it the album in her catalog where she had the least authorship control.
Why is OnlySee so hard to find?
OnlySee was released only in Australia on December 23, 1997 through the small Flavoured Records label, with little to no promotion. It sold around 1,200 copies, roughly 1,000 of them in Adelaide. It has never had a wide international reissue.
Why was OnlySee credited to Sia Furler instead of Sia?
OnlySee was marketed under her full name Sia Furler, unlike her later albums released simply as Sia. She had recorded it after the breakup of her Adelaide band Crisp. The full-name credit is one reason the album is often overlooked in her discography.
What kind of music is on OnlySee?
OnlySee draws on trip hop, downtempo and acid jazz textures common to late 1990s Australian electronic soul. The arrangements lean on samplers, turntables and live instruments rather than the pop production of Sia's later work. It is closer in feel to her trip hop roots than her arena-pop era.
How many copies did OnlySee sell?
OnlySee sold approximately 1,200 copies, with about 1,000 of those sold in Adelaide alone. The album failed to chart anywhere. Its tiny sales reflect the near-total lack of promotion behind the Australia-only release.
