By the Numbers
Us and Them follows a clear division of labor. Brent Smith is the lyricist on every track, the constant voice of the record, while the music is a band effort co-written with producer Tony Battaglia, who shares a writing credit on ten of the thirteen songs. Battaglia's name sits alongside the four band members throughout, making him the album's second author as much as its producer. Two tracks step outside the core team: 'Beyond the Sun' brings in engineer Chris Gill as a co-writer, and 'Fake' pairs Smith with outside songwriter John Shanks. Only 'The Dream' and 'Shed Some Light' carry Smith's name alone.
Us and Them is the second studio album by American rock band Shinedown, released on October 4, 2005 by Atlantic Records. Produced by Tony Battaglia and recorded in Jacksonville and Sanford, Florida, it built on the hard rock and post-grunge sound of the band's debut while pushing toward heavier and more atmospheric writing. Frontman Brent Smith handled the lyrics across the record, while the music was co-written by the band with Battaglia, who shares a credit on most tracks. The lead single 'Save Me' reached number one on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart, followed by 'I Dare You' and 'Heroes,' both of which reached the rock top five. It is the last Shinedown album to feature founding guitarist Jasin Todd and bassist Brad Stewart, and it was certified Platinum by the RIAA in 2018.
