By the Numbers
The Sound of Madness is a co-written album. Brent Smith supplies the lyrics and lead vocals across the record, but the songs are built with outside collaborators rather than by the band alone. Nine of the eleven standard tracks are credited to Smith and songwriter Dave Bassett, whose legal name is Dave Richard Bassett, making that pair the authorial center of the album. The breakthrough single 'Second Chance' is a Smith and Bassett co-write, a partnership that won Bassett an ASCAP Pop Award in 2010. The two exceptions are 'Breaking Inside,' co-written with Bobby Huff, and 'Call Me,' co-written with Tony Battaglia. Rob Cavallo produced every track.
The Sound of Madness is the third studio album by Shinedown, released June 24, 2008 on Atlantic Records and the record that broke the band into the mainstream. Produced by Rob Cavallo, it arrived with a reshaped lineup that added guitarist Zach Myers and bassist Eric Bass alongside frontman Brent Smith and drummer Barry Kerch, with Nick Perri on lead guitar. Nearly every track was written by Smith with outside co-writer Dave Bassett, a partnership that shaped the album's polished, radio-ready hard rock. The power ballad 'Second Chance' became the band's biggest hit, reaching number 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 and topping both the Mainstream Rock and Modern Rock charts, and it was later certified 3x Platinum. The album spun off six singles that each topped a Billboard rock chart, including 'Devour,' 'Sound of Madness,' and 'If You Only Knew,' and was certified 2x Platinum by the RIAA.
