Data Insight

Every song on Leave a Whisper carries Brent Smith's lyrics, with the music co-written by the early Shinedown lineup of Jasin Todd, Brad Stewart, and Barry Kerch alongside producers Bob Marlette, Tony Battaglia, and Rick Beato. The three producers share writing credit on most of the twelve core tracks, so the credit column pairs Smith with a rotating cast of bandmates and producers rather than a single fixed team. The one song the band did not write is the cover of Lynyrd Skynyrd's 'Simple Man,' written by Ronnie Van Zant and Gary Rossington, which the group added after it took off on radio. It is the album's only outside song and its clearest non-authored moment.

Leave a Whisper is the debut studio album by Shinedown, released on May 27, 2003 through Atlantic Records. The Jacksonville, Florida band built the record around frontman Brent Smith's lyrics and the early lineup of guitarist Jasin Todd, bassist Brad Stewart, and drummer Barry Kerch, who co-wrote the music with producers Bob Marlette, Tony Battaglia, and Rick Beato. It produced the mainstream rock hits 'Fly from the Inside' and '45,' both of which reached the top five of the US Mainstream Rock chart. The band's stripped-down cover of Lynyrd Skynyrd's 'Simple Man' broke out on radio and became one of the record's most recognized tracks, later added to the reissue. The album was certified Platinum by the RIAA and set the template for Shinedown's blend of hard rock, post-grunge, and alternative metal.
