By the Numbers
Attention Attention is the clearest statement of Shinedown's core writing partnership. Brent Smith writes the lyrics and Eric Bass, the band's bassist, both produces the record and co-writes the music with him on the majority of tracks. Bass appears in the composer column under his legal name, William Frederic Bass Jr., while Smith is credited as Brently Stephen Smith. Outside writers Dave Bassett, Scott Stevens, and Zach Myers contribute to a handful of songs, and drummer Barry Kerch shares a credit on 'Creatures,' but the Smith-Bass axis drives the album from front to back.
Attention Attention is the sixth studio album by Shinedown, released May 4, 2018 on Atlantic Records. It is a concept album that follows a single character from a dark mental and emotional low through a fourteen-track arc toward recovery and self-worth, framed by the opening 'The Entrance' and the closing 'Brilliant.' Bassist Eric Bass produced the record and co-wrote the bulk of it with frontman and lyricist Brent Smith, the pair having become the band's core writing team by this era. The album was recorded at Bass's own Ocean Industries Studios in Charleston, South Carolina, and blends hard rock and post-grunge with alternative and electronic textures. All four of its singles reached number one on Billboard's Mainstream Rock chart, and the album topped the Top Rock, Top Hard Rock, and Top Alternative Albums charts while reaching number five on the Billboard 200. It was later certified Gold by the RIAA and expanded into a companion feature film directed by Bill Yukich.
