Body & Soul completes the authorship turn that Free began: Astley wrote or co-wrote every song on the album, with no covers anywhere. His partners include Rob Fisher and the Lisa Stansfield writing camp of Ian Devaney and Andy Morris. It was the last record before his 1990s retreat from the industry, so it became the most fully self-written statement of his early career.
Body & Soul is the fourth studio album by Rick Astley, released in September 1993 and his last before a long break from the music industry. Co-produced with Gary Stevenson, it continues the adult pop and soul direction of Free, with Astley writing or co-writing every track. His collaborators include Rob Fisher, Lisa Stansfield with her writing partners Ian Devaney and Andy Morris, and producer Dave West. Commercially it was a step down from his late-1980s peak, and soon after its release Astley stepped away from recording to focus on family life. It closed the first phase of his career and was a fully self-written record.
