By the Numbers
New Tattoo pairs Nikki Sixx with outside writer James Michael as the default credit on most tracks, a co-writing model the band would carry into their later work. Sixx still writes several songs with bandmates Mick Mars and Vince Neil, and drummer Randy Castillo earns credits too. The Tubes cover 'White Punks on Dope' is the one song from outside the band's writing.
New Tattoo is the eighth studio album by Motley Crue, released in July 2000 and the first without drummer Tommy Lee, who left in 1999 and was replaced by Randy Castillo. A deliberate return to the band's straightforward hard rock after the experimental Generation Swine, it was co-written largely by Nikki Sixx and outside collaborator James Michael. The album included a cover of the Tubes' 'White Punks on Dope,' and the lead single 'Hell on High Heels.' Released on the band's own Motley Records, it sold modestly compared to their commercial heyday.
