More Than You Think You Are marked a shift toward fuller band involvement in the songwriting, with Kyle Cook and Paul Doucette taking larger co-writing roles alongside Rob Thomas. Thomas still anchored the lead writing and vocals, but the credits show a more collaborative band than on the first two albums. Matt Serletic produced the record in full, his third and final consecutive Matchbox Twenty album. The single 'Unwell' became a defining hit, topping the Adult Top 40 chart for 18 weeks.

Rob Thomas began sharing writing credits with other members on several songs, and "Disease" was notably co-written with Mick Jagger. The album produced hits including "Unwell," "Bright Lights," and "Disease." Track 13 "So Sad So Lonely" is a hidden track. "Could I Be You" (track 8) is the sole composition of drummer Paul Doucette.
