Data Insight

Balvin wrote alone on nine of the fifteen tracks. The six he shared went almost entirely to people already working on the beats: Motiff on both songs he produced, Mr. Pomps on "Tranquila," Bull Nene on "Yo Te Lo Dije," and Vein with Keith Ross on "Lose Control," the one track that leaves reggaeton for electro house. "6 AM" carries four writers, Balvin, Farruko, Sky Rompiendo and Mosty, and it is the only song where Mosty steps off the mixing board and into the writing credit. He mixed fourteen of the fifteen tracks and co-produced ten, which makes him the steadiest hand on a record credited to a rotating cast of producers.

La Familia is J Balvin's debut studio album, out October 29, 2013 on Capitol Latin. Sky Rompiendo produced eight of the fifteen tracks and Mosty mixed all but one, so the record holds a single sound from end to end. "6 AM" with Farruko became the breakout, topping Billboard's Latin Airplay and Latin Rhythm Airplay charts. The album was nominated for Best Urban Music Album at the 15th Latin Grammy Awards.

Frequently Asked Questions La Familia

When did J Balvin release La Familia?
October 29, 2013, on Capitol Latin. It was his debut studio album and followed his 2012 mix tape.
Who wrote the songs on La Familia?
Balvin wrote nine of the fifteen tracks by himself, registered under his legal name José Álvaro Osorio Balvín. The other six add a co-writer, almost always the producer of that track: Motiff on "Mil Fantasías" and "Live In Stereo," Mr. Pomps on "Tranquila," Bull Nene on "Yo Te Lo Dije," and Vein with Keith Ross on "Lose Control." "6 AM" has four writers.
Who produced La Familia?
Sky Rompiendo took the largest share at eight tracks. Mosty, Motiff, Mr. Pomps, Master Chris, DJ Urba and Rome LMN, Keith Ross and Vein produced the rest.
What were the singles from La Familia?
Five. "Yo Te Lo Dije" in March 2012, "Tranquila" in October 2012, "Sola" in June 2013, "6 AM" with Farruko in October 2013, and "La Venganza" in April 2014.
Did La Familia win any awards?
It was nominated for Best Urban Music Album at the 15th Latin Grammy Awards in 2014 and lost. "6 AM" picked up nominations for Best Urban Performance and Best Urban Song at the same ceremony, then won Latin Rhythm Song of the Year at the 2015 Billboard Latin Music Awards and two Lo Nuestro awards.
Who are the featured guests on La Familia?
Three. Farruko sings on "6 AM," Vein on "Lose Control," and Motiff on "Live In Stereo." Motiff and Vein both produced the tracks they appear on.
How well did La Familia sell?
The RIAA certified it seven-times platinum in the Latin field. It also went five-times platinum in Colombia and four-times platinum in Mexico. Pure US album sales were far smaller, standing at 15,000 as of October 2014, because Latin certifications count streaming alongside sales.
Who mixed La Familia?
Mosty mixed fourteen of the fifteen tracks. Keith Ross mixed "Lose Control," the one he produced with Vein. Pipe Florez recorded "Sola."
What is La Familia B Sides?
A reissue from September 2014 that keeps all fifteen original songs and adds three new recordings plus remixes. One of the new songs, "Ay Vamos," went to number one in Colombia, the Dominican Republic and on Billboard's Latin Rhythm chart.
How long is La Familia?
54 minutes and 25 seconds across fifteen tracks.
