By the Numbers
Mr. Moonlight is a pure Gramm-Jones album. Every one of the eleven tracks carries the writing team of Lou Gramm and Mick Jones, the core partnership that defined Foreigner's biggest records, reunited here after Gramm's late-1980s departure. Bassist Bruce Turgon co-writes four songs and keyboardist Jeff Jacobs three, so the credits stay entirely in-house with no outside writers anywhere on the record. On the page the composer column shows the writers' legal names, Louis Grammatico for Lou Gramm and Michael Leslie Jones for Mick Jones, while Turgon and Jacobs record under their own names. Jones and Gramm also share the producer's chair with engineer Mike Stone, with Philadelphia's Phil and Joe Nicolo adding production and mix work on the two singles 'White Lie' and 'Rain.'
Mr. Moonlight is the eighth studio album by Foreigner, released in Europe on Arista Records in October 1994 and issued in the United States through Rhythm Safari in early 1995. It marked the return of lead singer Lou Gramm, who had left the band after 1987's Inside Information to pursue a solo career and a stint in Shadow King, reuniting him with founder and guitarist Mick Jones. The reunion lineup rebuilt the band around Gramm and Jones with keyboardist Jeff Jacobs, bassist Bruce Turgon, and drummer Mark Schulman, the first Foreigner album in fifteen years without Rick Wills and Dennis Elliott. Gramm and Jones wrote every track together, with Turgon and Jacobs adding co-writes, and the album leaned back toward the melodic hard rock of the band's peak. Despite the reunion and guest turns from Duane Eddy and Billy Bremner, it was a commercial disappointment, stalling at number 136 on the Billboard 200 and becoming the band's worst-selling studio record.
