4 is the fourth studio album by the American-British rock band Foreigner, released in July 1981 on Atlantic Records and the biggest-selling record of their career. Recorded at Electric Lady Studios in New York with producer Robert John "Mutt" Lange and band leader Mick Jones, it arrived after the group trimmed from six members to a four-piece of Jones, singer Lou Gramm, bassist Rick Wills, and drummer Dennis Elliott, a lineup change the album title nods to. It topped the Billboard 200 for ten weeks and was certified six-times platinum in the United States. The record produced the hits 'Urgent,' with a saxophone solo by Motown star Junior Walker, and the ballad 'Waiting for a Girl Like You,' which spent a then-record ten weeks at number two on the Hot 100. A young Thomas Dolby added synthesizers to several tracks, and the polished, radio-ready sound made 4 a defining arena-rock album of the early MTV era.
