One by One is the fourth studio album by Foo Fighters, released in October 2002 on RCA Records and produced by Nick Raskulinecz, John King, and the band. It was recorded in the aftermath of a period of personal difficulties for Grohl that included a near-dissolution of the band following members' side projects, and the sessions that produced the album were preceded by an initial abandoned recording attempt that was ultimately replaced. Grohl wrote all material; the album is the most straightforwardly hard rock of the career to that point, with 'All My Life' (which won the Grammy for Best Hard Rock Performance), 'Times Like These,' 'Low,' and 'Have It All' among the principal tracks. 'All My Life' spent eight weeks at number one on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart and 'Times Like These' received significant AOR radio play; the album debuted at number three on the Billboard 200 and has been certified three-times platinum in the United States. One by One is generally regarded as a commercial consolidation of the band's rock radio identity rather than a creative expansion, but its commercial performance confirmed the stability of the audience they had built since The Colour and the Shape. The album's commercial consolidation (three-times platinum, multiple rock radio number ones) confirmed that Grohl's formula for radio rock, built on powerful riffs and melodic choruses delivered with genuine emotional commitment, was commercially sustainable across successive albums without significant creative evolution, a stability that allowed him to take the greater artistic risks of In Your Honor.
