But Here We Are was produced by Greg Kurstin and Foo Fighters, with Mark "Spike" Stent mixing and Randy Merrill mastering, recorded at Studio 606 in Los Angeles. It is the first Foo Fighters album without Taylor Hawkins, who died suddenly on March 25, 2022, the album was written and recorded as a direct response to that loss, as well as to the death of Dave Grohl's mother Virginia. Josh Freese, who had previously toured with Nine Inch Nails, A Perfect Circle, and Weezer, joined as Foo Fighters' new drummer for the recording. The album debuted at number two on the Billboard 200.
But Here We Are is the eleventh studio album by Foo Fighters, released in June 2023 on Roswell/RCA Records and produced by Greg Kurstin. It was the first album made after the death of drummer Taylor Hawkins in March 2022, and the record that explicitly addressed the grief of that loss, making it the most emotionally confessional album of the band's career and one of the more significant bereavement documents in rock history. Grohl wrote all material; tracks including 'Rescued,' 'Under You,' and 'The Teacher' address the loss, survival, and the specific experience of continuing to exist as a band after the loss of a core member, with a directness and vulnerability that was noted by critics as a departure from the emotional register of the band's previous 11 albums. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and on the UK Albums Chart simultaneously, the band's highest chart performance on the UK chart, and has been certified gold in the United States. But Here We Are won the Grammy for Best Rock Album, the band's seventh win in the category, cementing their position as the most Grammy-awarded rock act in the history of the category. The album stands alongside Wasting Light as the most critically praised of the band's catalog and as an artifact of genuine emotional weight rather than commercial calculation.
