By the Numbers
Grand Champ gave DMX a record fifth straight No. 1 debut, and he wrote all of his own raps over a deep producer bench that included an early Kanye West credit alongside Swizz Beatz, No I.D., and Rockwilder. Every song on the album carries documented writers, but four spoken radio and comedy skits have no songwriter credit in any source, which is why the album sits just short of fully verified. On the actual songs, his lyrical authorship is complete.
DMX's fifth studio album, released September 16, 2003, through Def Jam Recordings and Ruff Ryders Entertainment. It debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, his fifth consecutive number-one debut, a record at the time. The album features one of Kanye West's earliest major production credits on "Dogs Out." "Where the Hood At?" became one of his most recognizable singles. 50 Cent and Styles P appear on "Shot Down," and Eve and Jadakiss team up with DMX on "We're Back." The bonus track "X Gon' Give It to Ya," originally recorded for the Cradle 2 the Grave soundtrack, was included on international editions and later became one of his most-streamed records. Patti LaBelle closes the album on "Thank You." DMX wrote all of his own lyrics throughout.
