On Through the Night shows Def Leppard's writing as a true group effort from the start. Almost every song carries three or four band members in its credits, with Steve Clark and Joe Elliott on nearly all of them and Pete Willis and Rick Savage close behind. Producer Tom Allom shaped the sound but did not write, so the authorship sits squarely with the band, a pattern that holds across their whole catalog even as the lineup changes.
On Through the Night is the debut studio album by Def Leppard, released in March 1980 when most of the band were still teenagers. It captures the young Sheffield group as part of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal, melodic and ambitious but rawer than the polished sound they would later perfect. Songs like 'Rock Brigade' and 'Wasted' were written collectively by the band, with the writing shared across guitarist Steve Clark, singer Joe Elliott, bassist Rick Savage and guitarist Pete Willis. Producer Tom Allom gave the record a clean hard rock edge. Some UK fans accused the band of chasing American success on 'Hello America,' but the album reached the US Top 100 and went platinum there, setting the stage for everything that followed.
