Hysteria credits every main track to the same five names: Joe Elliott, Rick Savage, Phil Collen, Steve Clark and producer Robert John 'Mutt' Lange. There are no outside writers and no solo credits on the album proper, which makes it the cleanest example of the band-plus-Lange writing model. Years of studio work went into shaping these songs collectively, and the credits reflect that shared authorship from start to finish.
Hysteria is the fourth studio album by Def Leppard, released in August 1987 after a long and difficult three-year recording process. It followed drummer Rick Allen's loss of his arm in a 1984 car crash and his return to the band on a custom electronic kit. Produced by Robert John 'Mutt' Lange, who co-wrote every main track with the band, the album took layered, meticulous studio craft to an extreme. It produced seven singles, including 'Pour Some Sugar on Me,' 'Love Bites' and the title track, and became one of the best-selling albums of the decade. The writing is credited collectively to Joe Elliott, Rick Savage, Phil Collen, Steve Clark and Lange across the record, the purest expression of the band-plus-Lange model.
