The Things We Can't Stop marks Cold's most collaborative writing era. Scooter Ward remains the primary lyricist but shares writing credit (on lyrics and music) with guitarist Nick Coyle on 'The Devil We Know' and 'We All Love,' and with bassist Lindsay Manfredi on 'Better Human.' The album also includes a cover of Snow Patrol's 'Run,' with songwriting credited to all five Snow Patrol members. Zac Gilbert contributed the music on 'The One That Got Away' while Ward wrote the lyrics.

Eight years passed after Superfiction, and Cold came back on Napalm Records in September 2019 with a lineup that had turned over almost entirely. It is the only album with guitarist Nick Coyle, the first with bassist Lindsay Manfredi, and the first without either bassist Jeremy Marshall or drummer Sam McCandless, with Aaron Fulton credited on drums. Jeremy Parker produced again, this time working with Scooter Ward and Coyle. Track five is a cover of Snow Patrol's 'Run,' the one song here Cold did not write, and Coyle shares the writing with Ward on 'The Devil We Know' and 'We All Love.'
