By the Numbers
A Different Kind of Pain is the first Cold album where another band member, Sam McCandless, shares lyricist credit on every track. McCandless and Ward co-wrote all eleven songs together, and guitarist Matt Loughran joined them as a third co-writer on 'Another Pill' and 'When Heaven's Not Far Away.' Producer Michael Baskette, who would later work with Alter Bridge and Slash, contributed keyboards and string arrangements throughout.
Cold recorded this at Studio Barbarossa in Bavon, Virginia over the turn of 2005 with Michael Baskette producing, in the middle of a label change and a run of lineup shuffles. Scooter Ward wrote it while his sister was fighting cancer and his engagement was coming apart, and the songs push further into melody and further away from the aggression of the first two records. Drummer Sam McCandless shares the writing credit on all eleven tracks, an arrangement that turns up on no other Cold album. It sold around 160,000 copies in the US and was the last thing the band made before splitting up in 2006 for close to three years.
