Snuff Garrett assembled the songs and the hit title track came from Bob Stone, not Cher, while the rest of the record draws on writers like James Taylor and the team behind 'He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother.' Cher's only writing credit is a share of the closing 'Chastity Sun,' the lone exception on a record otherwise sung rather than written by her.
Gypsys, Tramps & Thieves is the seventh solo studio album by Cher, released in 1971 and the record that revived her solo career. Produced by Snuff Garrett, it pairs interpretations of contemporary pop and soul songs with the story-song title track that gave Cher her first solo number one in the United States. The album leans entirely on outside writers: Cher does not write the hit single or most of the record, and her only writing contribution is a co-credit on the closing 'Chastity Sun.' It set the template for her early-1970s run of narrative singles produced by Garrett.
