By the Numbers
Every song on Letter to You was written by Bruce Springsteen, and the album was cut live in the studio with the full E Street Band playing together over four days at his home studio, Thrill Hill Recording, in November 2019. Three of the tracks date back to before his 1973 debut and were resurrected here: "Janey Needs a Shooter," "If I Was the Priest," and "Song for Orphans." The title track "Letter to You" and "Ghosts" anchor the record's reflections on mortality, memory, and the bandmates Springsteen has lost. Recording everyone in the room at once gave the album the loose, immediate feel of a band performance rather than a layered studio production.
Letter to You is Bruce Springsteen's twentieth studio album, released on October 23, 2020. Co-produced by Ron Aniello and Springsteen, it was recorded live in the studio with the E Street Band in just five days. Three tracks ('Janey Needs a Shooter,' 'If I Was the Priest,' and 'Song for Orphans') are reworked versions of songs written before 1973 that had never been officially released. The album was accompanied by a black-and-white Apple TV+ documentary filmed during the recording sessions. All twelve tracks were written solely by Springsteen.
